A Clinical Review of the Inguinal Hernia

Abstract
This is a review and analysis of 142 patients with inguinal hernias were repaired between September 1979 and September 1983 at Soon Chun Hyang Kumi Hospital.
The following results were obtained.
1) The incidence of inguinal hernia was 7,1% of all patients operated at the department of surgery in the same period. Sex, distribution was slanted toward the male in 5.5: 1. Group at greatest risk for inguinal hernia was children up to 5 years in 50.8%.
2) Inguinal hernias were found on the right side in 61.9%, left side in 35.9% and bilateral in 2.2%. Indirect type was noted in 96.4% and direct type in 3.6%.
3) Incarcerated hernia was noted in 7.7% of all cases. Strangulated hernia was one case and hydrocele was combined in 4.2% of all cases.
4) The cardinal symptoms and signs were inguinal mass in 87.3% and scrotal enlargement in 26.7%.
5) Hernial contents were noted in 10 cases (7%). Small intestine, ovary, urinary bladder and appendix were involved.
6) Inguinal hernias were repaired in different methods such as high ligation 57.7%, Bassini type 36.6%, McVay type 3.5%, Ferguson type 2.2%.
7) Anesthesias were performed in general 51.4%, epidural 43.6%, local 5%.
8) Average duration of hospitalization was 5.2 days and post operative complication rate was 4.2%.
9) There was one recurrence case but no death.
